Jonathan Kersten, senior Mathematics, Data, and Systems major, explored the amazing ability of using two easily obtained data values related to a sport like baseball and develop surprisingly accurate expectations for the teams. The technique, Pythagorean Expectation, has been used in various alternatives using number of runs scored and number of runs allowed to predict a baseball team’s winning percentage with miniscule error. Jonathan applied a similar technique to data from recent years of Taylor intramural flag football and shared how expectations for the teams and their final results compared.
