The Math Behind the Game

In the 1960s there was a game that came out called Dr. Nim in which “Dr. Nim” could beat you in every game played, if you played according to the rules. How could this work? Emily Odell, a Mathematics Education major, explains the mathematical structure of this game and similar games in her presentation “The Game of Nim” shared for students and faculty on November 8, 2022. Participants learned that modeling the problem with binary numbers and following specific strategies can allow the seemingly random events in the game to result in a win each time.
