Dr. Amish Mishra was selected for the prestigious Project NExT cohort through the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). After a highly competitive application process, he joined this distinguished group of early-career faculty dedicated to advancing both teaching and research in mathematics.
What is Project NExT?
Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) equips early-career PhDs in mathematics to become effective educators and disciplined researchers. Participants explore innovative and engaging teaching strategies, build connections with colleagues across the country, and receive mentoring in research and professional development. The program also provides the opportunity to attend three national conferences over the course of the year.
Conferences and Presentations
During his time in the program, Dr. Mishra attended three major gatherings:
- MAA MathFest 2024 in Indianapolis, IN
- Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Seattle, WA – the largest international mathematics conference
- MAA MathFest 2025 in Sacramento, CA
At these conferences, Mishra gave a total of four presentations—once at each MathFest and twice at JMM. His talks highlighted the exciting work taking place in Taylor’s Data Analytics program, bringing national attention to the department’s innovative efforts.
Connections and Community
One of the most meaningful aspects of the experience was the opportunity to connect with faculty from across the country. Although the MAA is not a faith-based organization, Dr. Mishra experienced God’s providence through a special encounter with Dr. Adam Carty, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Emory & Henry University. The two discovered they not only shared a love of mathematics but also a deep faith in Christ. This connection quickly grew into friendship, with the pair traveling to conferences together as colleagues, roommates, and brothers in Christ.
Impact and Enrichment
The lessons learned and connections built through Project NExT will enrich Dr. Mishra’s teaching and research at Taylor University. Beyond the classroom, this experience has also deepened his professional network and personal faith journey, reminding us all of the unique ways God weaves together opportunities for growth.
