One of the culminating projects in Professor Erickson’s statistics class is a data gathering activity involving the drop of paper helicopters in the Euler atrium. While members of the team drop the helicopters, other members are timing the landings. Professor Erickson describes the purpose of the exercise as an opportunity for students to not only design a statistical experiment, but then to apply their statistical analysis skills as they review the data. It is exciting to get to the time in each semester when we are hearing the repeated 3…2…1…drop in the Euler atrium as another cohort of students experience valuable data analytics techniques.
