Last week, the math department had its 52nd Annual Tau Mu Alpha Banquet! It was a very nice evening of conversation and fellowship over dinner. The wife of one of our faculty members prepared a lovely meal of lasagna and salad. We had the honor of recognizing three seniors with awards for their contributions to the math department. Ruby Harris was awarded Outstanding Service to the Math Department, Rebekah Firestone was awarded the Applied Mathematics Achievement Award, and lastly, Mark Lee was awarded the Senior Mathematics Achievement Award! A special thanks to all the graduating seniors for being a part of our department and for who you are.
After dinner, we had the privilege of hearing from a Taylor alumnus, Evan Miyakawa ’17. He is well-known for his work in college basketball advanced analytics. Evan shared how his side hobby of analyzing college basketball has now become his full-time job. One of the biggest pieces of advice he left with the college students was not to be scared to start trying and exploring new skills. You can build skills now – like learning how to build a website – that will be helpful in the future, so don’t limit yourself to just the stuff you are learning in classes. Altogether, it was a wonderful evening and a wonderful celebration of another year for the math department.
